The End of an Era

I have been "decorating" cakes for about 10 years now. I did a pretty uninspired wedding shower cake tonight.
I'm finally burned out.
Lost my mojo.
Elvis has left the building.
I have one baby shower cake order in a few weeks, and then I'm done. This is what I feel like.*

*Just so we're clear, I didn't MAKE this cake.

Addendum to "High Tech" Parenting

Yeesh...I forgot to tell you Lily was pretty impressed with my response to her picture message:

If you happened to see the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse galloping through our yard and were concerned, don't worry. It's not the end of the world, John just has a cold.
Oh, and on the off chance John can find his way back to the blog and reads this, just kidding.....

"High Tech" Parenting

My 16-year-old (Lily) called me at work last Monday to ask about what time she could go over to her friend Kaylee's house. They were having a back-to-school bonfire, and she needed to get over there and help get everything ready for the evening's festivities. I had previously informed her that she wasn’t doing ANYTHING until her bedroom and bathroom were cleaned to my specifications. She assured me both jobs had been done and done well. Now…Lily is notorious for saying she:

- cleaned her room
- took out the trash

- folded her laundry
- unloaded the dishwasher
- etc., etc…..

when, in fact, she did not. My final comment to her before I hung up the phone was, “I will be checking when I get home, and if it’s not done, you are NOT GOING ANYWHERE.” Her response was a superior and confident, “Fine.” This was at 3:00 pm. I would be home in approximately two hours which, considering what those rooms looked like, was not enough time to get them both done. Four minutes later, I received the following photos via my cell phone with the message:

Told you :)

That kid cracks me up, but it's nice to know she took me seriously.

Robin, the Cardinal

Well, my little Robbie officially starts college today. She's been on campus for a week now, and judging from her Facebook, is having a great time. I talked to her last night. She and some "helpful" boy were going to walk through her schedule to see where all her classes are. Honestly, I'm glad she's having a good time. I've already heard about one of her classmates who came home crying and homesick.

This is her on the first day of kindergarten, and what I'm picturing she'll look like walking across campus. I love her and miss her like crazy!!

First Post and Yearbook Yourself

Welcome to my first post. I have no idea what direction this blog will take, or if anyone will read it. I've just enjoyed reading some other folks' blogs so much, I wanted to get in on the action.

Here goes....I stumbled across Yearbook Yourself the other day, a website with quintessential yearbook pictures from 1950 to 2000. You can upload a picture and see what you (or an unsuspecting victim you just happen to have a picture of) would have looked like back in the day. I enjoyed wasting a good amount of time doing this, but it got me to thinking: 1968 was a big year for me and my husband. He started college, and I started kindergarten. Obviously, we didn't know each other then, but here's what we looked like:

(Don't be fooled by his altar boy looks!)

(My haircut is the result of falling asleep
with gum in my mouth and and an angry
mom with a pair of dull scissors.)

I got to wondering... if I had been a co-ed at
Michigan State in the Fall of '68, would I have
caught his eye?

According to my MIL, he prefers blondes...

Either way, it was fun to see the different looks. Maybe a future post will show John in my heyday, the awesome 80s, although that would require a post of my senior picture...I'll have to think about that one!!
